Today 38 OSCE states invoked the "Moscow Mechanism" for an inquiry on 🇷🇺's human rights practices. This should be a stepping stone for these 38 states to set up a longer-term reporting process at UN Human Rights Council, w/ a Special Rapporteur on 🇷🇺. osce.org/odihr/523512

1/ In its concluding observations of #HongKong review the UN Human Rights Committee states strongly that "China should take concrete steps to repeal the current National Security Law and, in the meantime, refrain from applying the Law..." bit.ly/3ox7DzB @OHCHRAsia

📢To say that this is an outrage 😤 is an understatement. The UK Govt @trussliz @tariqahmadbt @UK_FoRBEnvoy have taken out commitments to abortion & sexual health rights from an int'l statement on gender equality after more than 20 countries had signed on, giving no explanation🧵

China seeks to avoid its human rights obligations by describing all of its rights issues as internal affairs, overlooking the fact that the whole purpose of the human rights system is to prevent violations through monitoring and reporting within countries. - @JohnFisher_hrw

.@hrw: Rights-respecting UN member states should elbow their way onto the UN NGO Committee to tip the balance against rights abusers like #China, #Cuba, #Nicaragua. Otherwise, the NGO Committee will forever remain the UN’s anti-NGO committee. hrw.org/report/2017/09/05/co…

.@hrw: UN chief @antonioguterres should name bold new human rights boss who won't flinch from criticizing #China, US & other big govts. High commissioner isn't a diplomat but top UN rights advocate. Speaking out takes priority over dialogue w/ govts. hrw.org/news/2022/06/15/un-c…

🧵 We note the announcement by UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, that she will conclude her term in August. The post of High Commissioner requires a mandate holder who is principled, independent, expert, and deeply committed to human rights.

Everything in @mbachelet's statement on impunity is true. Why won't she apply it to #China? #StandUp4HumanRights #ReleaseTheReport
UN human rights chief @mbachelet told Security Council today that impunity “emboldens perpetrators, silences victims & undermines prospects for peace, human rights & development.” Sadly, her recent #China visit will likely fuel impunity for abuses there. washingtonpost.com/opinions/…

@mbachelet’s handling of her China visit seriously diminished the credibility of @UNHumanRights,’ says @guardian. It betrayed victims and appeased authoritarians. The best thing she could do now is release a strong, long overdue #Xinjiang report theguardian.com/commentisfre… @KenRoth

“As the UN’s top human rights official, it’s the High Commissioner’s job to expose abuses, to stand with victims and stand up to violators. Her toothless #China visit - following almost four years of access negotiations – delivered none of that" said @JohnFisher_hrw of @hrw.
