A lot of people keep thinking they’re somehow immune to the breakdown of social order, maybe because they believe the right things, maybe because they work in the right industry, maybe because they have the right friends. Every last one of them is horribly mistaken.

If you’re quote tweeting an insane hateful rant you’re also making sure everyone who follows you sees an insane hateful rant, probably aimed at people like them given that they follow you and the rant pissed you off. Are you sure you want to make them see that?

Yes. And the refusal to engage on the issue or even take it seriously, the attempts to periodically hint that caring about it is racist, are measures in their own right of how we got here and why so many people would rather die slowly than live in the world the consensus built.
One way to frame the fentanyl issue is that, for some crucial percentage of this country, hopelessness, purposelessness, and alienation are such that ingesting a Chinese chemical weapon dedicated to our destruction is a matter of indifference or even a step -up-.

The life cycle of “something happened in Foreignlandia” on US twitter: “This is YOUR fault America”-> “This is just a US issue with silly flags”-> “Welcome to all the new Foreignlandia experts”-> “Where are the American voices? Help us!”-> “This is COLONIALISM”-> ♾, etc.

What’s missing from the conversation is that most men don’t want to hurt women, and the cultural message at present a that any contact between them without explicit prior consent is harmful. But we lack language to articulate that now due to the presumption of predatory intent.
Do it anyway! Back before dating apps it was understood that a few awkward rejections was just the cost of playing the game. If she says, “no,”move on, try someone else some later day. What do you have to lose?

The can tell men to stop being such cowards and man up if it’s a question of enduring pain. If it’s a question of getting them prepared to hurt other people to get what they want, something more is required. Go look at how pickup artists talk. There’s a reason for it.

If education prepares people for the workforce, and education as it actually exists is semi-openly acknowledged to contain large amounts of unnecessary drudgery unattached from any specific productive goal, then what are students being given to understand about the value of work?
This seems like the cheapest cheap shot until you've seen that it's the truth. A whole lot of the current anti-capitalist kids just don't want to have to keep a real job. Work sucks, that's how it goes.

It is not even noon yet and already I am begging twitter to stop telling me so much about the creepy sex lives of aging political extremists today.

It’s worth pausing to note that every successful relationship now, every marriage, every family, comes into being as a direct result of people choosing to break social norms and do things that the majority regard as wrong. Happiness is committing a crime and getting away with it.
Half of single men report not approaching women out of the fear of being seen as creepy. psychologytoday.com/us/blog/…

If every piece of fan reaction to a show is using it as an excuse to express hatred and contempt for some group of people, at some point that’s on the people making the show. You know what you’re creating and what reaction it gets; that’s why you were hired. You’re choosing.

“This show is great because it really shows (Group of People) as the worthless pieces of shit they really are.” What a thing to use your talents to put into the world. And yet this kind of completely psychotic reaction to hate propaganda is now pretty standard mainstream fare.

I’m sure there’s a logical explanation for why I’m hand-feeding ice cream to cats at 1 AM and I’m sure that when I figure out what it is I’ll tell myself.

There’s a counterintuitive thesis to the effect that things aren’t stranger now so much as that the illusion of the comprehensiveness of media created an artificially higher sense of homogeneity than before. People were always weird, but we used to expect that before screens.

The suspect simultaneously being an anonymous clerk at a Navy base/Tolkien zine publisher & Ren Faire enthusiast/organic food advocate/gun nut-militia guy seems bizarre in 2022, but there were a lot of guys like that floating around late 60s-early 70s California.

It’s all well and good to ask people to love their enemies and have friends with opposite views, but let’s cut the bullshit: most won’t. The more interesting/practical ask is: cultivate friends with similar values but different principles, similar goals but different reasoning.

There’s a notion on the right that allowing gay people out in public destroyed heterosexuality. It’s worth asking whether the decades of efforts to make heterosexuality as threatening and hostile to everyone as possible helped fuel alternative sexual acceptance as a side effect.
Whoever had the idea that you should bring your whole self to work (including bizarre sexual proclivities & both real and imagined mental illnesses), but also that even the slightest perceived missteps and insensitivities works constitute firing offenses, was truly an evil genius

Teach the youth that those they desire hate them, and you get what we have: a slow collapse of respect, love, and charity but not of desire itself, and that desire looks for other outlets- some actually sexual, some simply attempts to imagine a sexuality that isn’t terrifying.

There is a certain kind of pundit who cannot stop screaming “but look at this IMAGE, aren’t you disturbed by this IMAGE, it has SYMBOLISM, look at what it SAYS” and if you talk to them about the actual consequences of policy all they can talk about is what MESSAGE it sends.
Of all the lame attacks on Trump, this one stood out to me. Dude put a picture of himself and Kim Jong in their historic meeting at the DMZ. What former president wouldn’t do that?

A lot of the braintrust of our political parties is made up of third-rate image wizards with the processing depth of college freshmen, and as obvious as that is with progressives right now don’t ever fool yourself- it was just as prevalent with cons when they had cultural power.

The fundamental basis of the revolt against experts and expertise is that those who claim authority based on that status won’t put in the work to earn it and won’t pay the price when that failure is exposed. Time and again they fall back on manipulation instead- on “IMAGES.”

You get the sense sometimes that the final terminus of the post-Cold War western economy is a viral Tiktok about how to build a temporary shelter for one out of cheap foreign-made microwaves.
