It's simple: We, Hongkongers, #StandWithUkraine The Russian invasion of Ukraine threatens the lives of millions & invalidates the universal value of democracy, freedom, & right to self-determination. We call on the free world to step up in protecting Ukraine. It's now or never.

This means there are now 3 distinct large groups of #HongKong #PoliticalPrisoners: 1) serving multi-year sentences; 2) remanded in custody pending completion of trial; 3) completed sentences & presumed released. There are nearly as many who have gotten out as are still in.

Hundreds of trials of protesters & national security law defendants are on-going. Many will probably be convicted. The current total number of 1,098 #HongKong #PoliticalPrisoners is expected to reach between 1,500 & 2,000 by the end of 2023.

We must show solidarity with all #HongKong #PoliticalPrisoners, both those currently in custody & those presumed released. Due to the on-going crackdown on HK independent civil society, few orgs exist to serve the many needs of those released. We must consider how to fill the gap

In this op-ed @SenatorMenendez introduces the bi-partisan #TaiwanPolicyAct w/ @LindseyGrahamSC. "We saw the warning signs for Ukraine in 2014 & failed to take action [to deter] further Russian aggression. We can't afford to repeat that mistake w/ Taiwan." nytimes.com/2022/08/03/opini…

When #HongKong bookseller (& former #PoliticalPrisoner in China) #LamWingKee met @SpeakerPelosi in #Taiwan on Wednesday, he made a special plea for persecuted young HK protesters, hoping pathways to the US can be provided. HKDC calls for this too. rfa.org/cantonese/news/htm/t…

26 Republican senators issue joint statement supporting @SpeakerPelosi’s visit to #Taiwan. The continuing bi-partisan consensus in the US for #freedom in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Tibet & for Uighurs & a tougher stance toward the #CCP is very important. wsj.com/livecoverage/nancy-p…

As @SpeakerPelosi’s plane lands in #Taiwan, her op-ed appears in @washingtonpost: “…our delegation’s visit should be seen as an unequivocal statement that America stands with Taiwan, our democratic partner, as it defends itself & its freedom.” wapo.st/3oMi8z5

.@SpeakerPelosi has been one of the most consistent advocates for #freedom for Chinese, Tibetans, Uighurs, HongKongers & Taiwanese over the past 30 years. We are heartened by her visit to #Taiwan. The very first right in both the ICCPR & ICESCR is the #RightOfSelfDetermination.

Meanwhile, the #HongKong Education Bureau recently held a study session of Xi Jinping’s July 1 speech with 250 participants. These #CCP-style government-organized study sessions are becoming commonplace in HK. It’s indoctrination, not education. info.gov.hk/gia/general/2022…

Good to see the UK expanding eligibility for the BNO visa. Humanitarian pathways for those most persecuted in #HongKong is an area where, up to now, the most likely countries of refuge (UK, US, EU, Canada, Australia) have done far too little.
The UK has a historic and moral commitment the people of Hong Kong. That’s why I am extending our BN(O) route to allow young people born after the handover of Hong Kong with at least one BN(O) parent to live, work, study and build their lives in the UK. 🇭🇰🇬🇧
