Witold Pilecki is a symbol — a victim of the aggression of two totalitarian regimes. In 1940 Pilecki allowed himself to be captured by the occupying Germans in order to infiltrate the Auschwitz concentration camp as a voluntary prisoner where he organized an underground movement.

After escaping from Auschwitz, he fought in the Warsaw Uprising and later he joined General Władysław Anders Polish II Corps in Italy. After returning to Poland, he once again became involved in the resistance. This time opposing the communist regime imposed on Poland after #WW2.
