Figured we could all use some comfort food, so asked @shenlulushen for her recipe for Red Braised Pork, a dish beloved on both sides of the strait. Also: some recommendations of what to read and listen to while it's on the stove-chinafile.com/reporting-opin… chinafile.com/reporting-opin…

I’m Taiwanese and I Want to Thank Nancy Pelosi. As I argue in the essay, Taiwan’s agency is often overlooked in big powers games or in mainstream media. I appreciate @nytimes’ effort to present a Taiwanese perspective. Thanks go to @danmartintwit too! nytimes.com/2022/08/05/opini…

so the Pelosi trip has overshadowed it but it is worth noting just how nuts the current wave of anti-Japanese feeling in China is and the absolute nothingburger that started it.

Chinese internet users are increasingly turning to Mastodon, a Twitter and Weibo alternative, due to rising censorship. For many, the last straw was Chinese social media sites' new requirements to confirm their identities and display their IP locations- wsj.com/articles/as-china-ti…

China's military drills: 1. Were predictable 2. Announced in advance 3. Have an end date in a few days 4. Have cause no backlash & minimal panic in TW 5. Are not being met with escelation from TW or the US Compared to the 2017 N.Korea crisis, its scary, but not (yet) a crisis

Can we all, if just for a moment, put aside our differences, join hands and respect the suit?
Our visit reiterates that America stands with Taiwan: a robust, vibrant democracy and our important partner in the Indo-Pacific.

These guys are just politicians in robes now. They don’t even try to hide it, trading jabs with political leaders.
In his Rome speech on religious liberty, Justice Alito mocked "foreign leaders" who condemned his opinion overturning Roe v. Wade, including Boris Johnson, Macron, Trudeau, and ... Prince Harry. Of Boris, Alito quipped: "He paid the price." piped.kavin.rocks/watch?v=uci4uni6…

Congratulations, @shenlulushen. This is so well deserved. And I hope it causes lots more people to read the essay and ponder the many difficult questions it so elegantly raises. When can I stop by for celebratory 红烧肉?

2020 was a hard hard year. I'm proud that I wrote this essay that resonated with many. Rereading it brings me back to the first year of pandemic when I was cooking all day and everyday to escape reality. Many thanks to @susanjakes for her marvelous editing chinafile.com/reporting-opin…

The leap that "Nancy Pelosi visiting Taiwan = guaranteed 4th missile crisis" presumes US & Chinese leaders making very specific decisions in the worst possible way. I disagree that her trip makes a crisis inevitable, and those pushing that logic are borderline fearmongering.

Loved working on this @AnatolKlass story about the changing face of opera in Taiwan during the pandemic and its contrast to the also-changing opera scene across the strait.
I'm so grateful to @ChinaFile for letting me write about opera in Taiwan during the pandemic. chinafile.com/reporting-opin…

As a white male cisgender heterosexual who was elevated by the meritocracy, I just want to thank Bret Stephens for writing this. If he hadn't, I wouldn't have even realized I lived through a "cultural revolution" in which I became "taboo." Now I know I'm the real victim. ✊🏻
